Does running your own accounting firm give you the freedom you hoped it would? How can you improve your team, improve your firm, and as a result improve the quality of your life? That’s what ArmadilloCon 2022 sets out to answer. On 22nd June, we’re holding an in-person event with a list of fantastic speakers where we’ll be reflecting on the challenges the pandemic has brought and looking at how to level up your team’s mindset and skills.

The way in which we cultivate relationships (with our teams, with prospects and yes, at home) has changed.

Many teams have adopted a fully remote or hybrid way of working. And while we’ve heard about the positives and negatives for employees, little has been said about how this affects the firm owner.

Considering what a post Covid world looks like for your firm and your future can be overwhelming. It might even mean that you have to make some major changes to not only the way you work but the type of work you do. You might be considering a shift from compliance to more advisory based work. And then there’s the challenge of getting clients to see the value in all you offer. Understandably this could leave you feeling immense pressure.

So what have we learned?

There’s a balancing act that must be addressed. As businesses fight the financial challenges post pandemic they’re looking to their trusted advisors for more and more support. But who supports you, the trusted advisor, in meeting these challenges?

  • How might working remotely affect your team in 3 years time when they don’t have the skills or confidence to take over certain tasks – or even to take over the running of the firm?
  • How do your people increase the value of your business?

Whatever stage of business you’re in, developing your team is the answer. We must consider our teams AS the business, not simply a part of it.

Developing your team isn’t only about helping them – it’s helping them to help you

Like any type of investment, putting time, money, and energy into an employee’s development can be anxiety inducing: will that investment pay off? Am I making the right decision, for me and for them?

Developing your team will make your life easier now, and in the long run. It will mean:

  • You’re able to share the burden and responsibility – so that they can relieve some of the strain.
  • You’re able to remove yourself as the bottleneck in the business – you’re in a better position to remove yourself from the business as a whole when you want to.
  • You’ll be able to retain key people and improve their experience too –

Whatever you want from life – more time to yourself, less stress, more profits, more enjoyment, you must develop your people to develop your practice.

So how do you develop your team to perform at the level you need?

Start by joining us at Armadillo Con on June 22nd at via Zoom.

Some of you will already be familiar with Derek Redmond. Having broken the British 400m record on two occasions, Derek was one of the country’s best athletes during the 1980s and 1990s. A key member of the relay squad that won gold at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, he competed at the highest level for over a decade.

If you didn’t know him then, you will undoubtedly recognise him from one of the most inspirational scenes in Olympic history.

Derek represented his country at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. In the 400m semi-final Derek went into the race amongst the favourites but as he passed the 250m mark he tore his hamstring. Determined to finish the race he hobbled to the finish line with the help of his father as a 65,000-strong crowd cheered him on. This incident has since been voted one of the Olympics’ most inspirational moments by US network NBC and even referenced by Barack Obama in a presidential speech.

This injury signalled an end to his athletics career, but, committed to not letting his injury keep him down, he has since played basketball for England and played rugby 7s.

Derek’s story is truly inspiring. he now works as a motivational speaker sharing his remarkable story with audiences up and down the country. He has worked with a wide range of high profile brands delivering his inspiring stories from the track in corporate environments.
