What skills do Accountants need?

An article in the current ICAS magazine refers to a recent LinkedIn survey which suggests that “soft” skills are the most in-demand attributes in the job market. Good communication tops the annual list of qualities that recruiters are seeking.

What are so called “soft” skills?

We agree that “soft” skills are ever more important. There may have been a time when technical excellence alone was all that was required, however, the modern-day accounting professionals have many more demands placed upon them.

Soft skills for Accountants might include:

  • Improving personal impact and communication;

  • The ability to listen fully and show interest;

  • The ability to engage with clients and prospects and be engaging;

  • The ability to show understanding and build trust;

  • The ability to understand different motivational drivers and identify what is important to different people

  • The ability to cope and perform under pressure;

  • Building our network of professional contacts;

  • Being able to position client solutions and services

Where can we learn additional “soft” skills?

The demands for different skills, including “soft” skills, continue to grow as we progress through our accounting career.

This is exactly why some years ago we created our Developing People program in collaboration with The GroGroup.

The Developing People program begins with:

  1. Fast Futures – this is our starting point for graduates and apprentices who are in their first five years of qualification

  2. Developing Managers – is part of the continuing career development support and provides guidance and support on how to manage and how to be an effective manager

  3. Business Development – is for all team members because we are all involved, or should all be aware we are involved, in developing business

  4. Pathway to Partner is our highest level, giving aspiring partners the tools and skills involved with developing the firm, increasing their commercial acumen and overall leadership along with advance business development skills.
